The government must take responsibility for Hjälmaren and Mälaren to cope with climate change

The situation with changing water levels in Hjälmaren and Mälaren is so worrying that the government needs to act.
That is the message in a letter that the five governors of the counties that have beaches in the lakes have sent to the Ministry of the Environment.

- The events in Germany during the summer of 2021 provide examples of how serious the situation can be in weather conditions that are expected to become more common. In Lake Mälaren, in December 2000, the highest water level was measured during a regulated period since the 1940s. In Hjälmaren, several embankments were breached and a further number were close to crime, the letter states.
