Exhaust gases from recreational boats leave an environmental footprint

The intensive recreational boat traffic in Bohuslän leaves clear traces in bottom sediments, mussels and oysters, according to a newly published research report from the Marine Environment Institute. It is the first time that the extent to which exhaust gases from recreational boat traffic are stored in bottom sediments and aquatic organisms has been investigated.

- There is every reason to phase out petrol and diesel-powered boat engines, says Kjell Nordberg, professor of marine sciences at the University of Gothenburg.
