Scary scents can change the nutritional balance of the sea

Crayfish emit odors that are revealed by phytoplankton. Their way of protecting themselves from attack can affect the entire ocean's food web, new research at the University of Gothenburg shows.Phytoplankton accounts for almost half of the world's total primary production and constitutes food for, among other things, crayfish.

The phytoplankton may be microscopically small unicellular creatures, but their various defenses against predators are ingenious.
