MöjaLyftet and Skärgårdsflytten

Berg, one of the villages on Möja.
The owner of the picture is Möja Turistförening.

Möja is an island in the Stockholm archipelago, with surrounding islands staying there about 250 people all year round. In the summer, many times more in all holiday homes, maybe 2-3000 people. In addition, many tourists come to hostels, archipelago restaurants and museums. Many islands along the coast of Sweden have an aging population and too few children, so does Möja. Something must be done to lift the development and stop a downward spiral.

MöjaLyftet aims to create affordable housing as a contribution to making Möja more attractive to permanent residents. MöjaLyftet is run by Möjaskärgårdens Företagarförening, a member association of SIKO (Skärgårdens Intresseorganisationers Kontaktorganisation). MöjaLyftet is financed by projects from Värmdö Municipality, Stockholm Region and the County Administrative Board of Stockholm County.

A comprehensive survey aimed at all categories of residents has been conducted. The results clearly indicate that there is a will to increase the number of residents and that the shortage of housing is a hindering factor. Practical conditions for increased housing construction exist on Möja, partly on municipal land, but there are also private initiatives. Another important factor is of course that the school works well, SIKO and SRF (Skärgårdarnas riksförbund) work in parallel with the school issue. A webinar "The small school with the BIG opportunities" will be held 25/3 to highlight today's research on small schools and its potential.

To get an idea of the demand for housing on Möja, MöjaLyftet SIKO's Skärgårdsflytten uses a housing queue for the Stockholm archipelago which was launched on 23 February 2021 with Möja as the first island, www.levandeskärgård.se . The archipelago relocation will be expanded to include all major islands in the Stockholm archipelago that have their own projects to increase their population.
